If it keeps happening then it is normally due to insufficient filtration and can often be down to a pump problem.
If small solid particles (like leaves or stones) pass through your filter basket they sometimes jam up in the impeller inside your pump and seriously reduce the efficiency, and possibly even burn it out.
First signs are that the water returning to your pool through the jets is not as powerful as it used to be or there is a noticeable drop on the pressure gauge on the sand filter.
